Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How can I be paid gross?

We are a contract payment and invoicing service based on the Isle of Man and whose company due diligence is based on the Island.

You can be paid gross through DPS Consulting as you are a
self-employed sub-contractor with responsibility for your own tax affairs.

Q. What are my taxation responsibilities?

You will need to manage your own tax affairs to suit your current domicile/ resident status and length of stay in the UK or elsewhere in the world.

You are responsible for your own taxation and ensuring that you pay the correct level of personal tax according to your individual circumstances.

You should be registered as self-employed with the relevant tax authority in your area (see our Self-Employment section for further details).  You will need to familiarise yourself with the tax rules surrounding self-employment in the country in which you are working, or the country of your tax residency, in order to ensure you comply with the requirements.

We leave individual tax and self-employment arrangements up to the individual involved.

Q. Are you a Managed Service Provider (MSP)?

No.  We provide the services of self-employed professionals.  You sub-contract your services through the limited company as a self-employed individual in your own right.  You are therefore not working through a MSP.

Q. What is my position within DPS Consulting?

You are classified as a self-employed consultant.  Your services are sub-contracted to the client.  You will be neither a director nor an employee of the company.

Q. Does DPS Consulting assist in finding me work or in the recruitment process?

DPS Consulting understands the contract market and offers the services of self-employed consultants all over the world.   However, we do not assist in finding you work or in sourcing your contract assignments.

Q. What happens if I have multiple assignments or I source work through more than one recruitment company?

The advantage of being self-employed is that you decide your own work arrangements.  You decide when and where you will work, what assignments you undertake and what your charge-out rate will be.  There is no restriction on how much work you take on, or the number of Agencies or Clients that engage your services.  We just request that for each new assignment or work you source, you notify us of their company details so that we may establish our due diligence documentation with them.

We will also request that with each new assignment you actively re-assess your self-employment status.  We will issue an additional Self-Employment Statement for each new assignment or contract you undertake.

Q. What due diligence documentation will you provide to my Agency or Client?

As a contract payment and invoicing service, DPS Consulting will provide your Agency/Payroll with full company due diligence documentation before payment proceeds.  This documentation would include:

  • Certificate of Incorporation
  • VAT Registration
  • Company Bank Account

Q. What is the payment process?

Once we receive payment in our company bank account from your Agency or Client on the invoice raised for your work, we will transfer funds into your bank account on that same working day.

Funds will normally be received in your account three working days later. On the day of transfer, we will provide you with an electronic Payment Advice that outlines details of your payment.  No deductions, other than our 4.95% invoicing fee, will be made.

Q. Can my Agency or End-Client claim back the VAT?

Yes, your Agency or Client can simply claim any VAT that is invoiced through the process.

Q. I’ve heard of a 12.8% NI uplift.  What is this?

If you are paid through a limited company (i.e. through DPS Consulting) your Agency or Client will usually pass on the National Insurance uplift (12.8%) directly to you, the sub-contractor.  As NI is only a requirement of PAYE employees, the Agency or Client can, and often does, pass the 12.8% on to the contractor.

NI uplift can be a negotiating point you can use when discussing salary and/or a move to a limited company structure.

Q. Is confidentially maintained?

Yes.  All transactions are totally confidential and no details will be provided outside of our company.

We offer a professional and confidential corporate structure ideally suited to the self-employed International and Contractor market.  Full data protection and confidentiality is maintained.

Q. Why use DPS Consulting?

We offer a personal, professional and confidential service.

Additionally, professional self-employed contractors like the convenience and flexibility of DPS Consulting, as well as the autonomy to make decisions in relation to their own taxation and financial affairs to meet their current circumstances.
